A COMMUNITY group based in Glasgow's Southside is collecting plastic toys to turn them into new homeware items.
Part of Govanhill Bath Community Trust, the UpHub accepts donations of old children's toys from the community and turns them into new household items.
These upcycled candle holders, trays and plant pots are then up for sale on the organisation's website.
The UpHub prides itself on creating 100 percent recycled items and therefore reusing plastic that would otherwise go to a landfill and reducing waste.
The project is funded in part through the Glasgow Community Anchors’ Fund – a partnership between the HFD Charitable Foundation and Virgin Money Foundation.
Their activity, they say, is 'quite unique' to Glasgow but they are part of a global effort to reduce plastic misuse.
Lotti Blades-Barrett, project manager of the UpHub said: "We can recycle any toy, apart from really small action figures or anything similar.
"But the toys that we mainly work with are garden slides, little kitchen sets, dollhouses, see-saws. Basically, any plastic toys."
The items are first cleaned, deconstructed, and then the plastic is ground into tiny bits, which are later used to make the new objects by melting or casting.
Beyond plastic, the organisation recycles and upcycles other materials, such as textiles and wood.
