IT IS beginning to look a lot like Christmas around Glasgow this week, as decorated trees go up and festive lights are switched on.

Back in December 1951, Central Station was all a-glow with the beautiful central Christmas tree erected on the concourse.

Bailie Mrs Dewar had the honour of doing the official ‘switch-on’ as commuters joined in with some impromptu carol singing.

Meanwhile, shoppers are flocking on Argyle Street in the days before social distancing and masks were part of our daily lives.

The crowds are heading for the city centre’s big department stores and clothes shops, like Wallis, pictured on the right and Lewis’s, further up.

Glasgow city centre was buzzing with the sights, sounds and scents of Christmas.

Finally, whatever these young children were stuffing their faces with, they seemed to be enjoying it.

Our photographers had ventured down from Glasgow to Renfrew, where the kids of employees at Scottish Cables were enjoying their annual festive bash.

Scottish Cables was a major employer in Renfrew for many decades, eventually taken over by British Insulated Callendars Cables (BICC) in the 1960s. They produced power distribution cables, rubber insulated cables, electrical cables and copper wire.
