A WOMAN will appear in court charged with alleged fire-raising following several reported blazes in one Wishaw street.

After numerous reports of fires being set in the gardens of the flats at Hareston Crescent, officers clamped down on the issue and carried out a targeted approach to resolve it.

Police identified a 40-year-old resident and she has been reported to the procurator fiscal.

Anti-social behaviour has also been an issue in the area.

Officers have been working alongside partners in North Lanarkshire Council's Anti-Social Team, Housing and Environmental Officers to help resolve this.

Local officer, PC Welsh, said: "We were alerted of the issues by local people, CCTV monitoring and conducting patrols in the area and it was clear something further had to be done to stop the issues.

"We identified a 40-year-old female resident and she has been reported to the procurator fiscal for alleged fire-raising.

"We also worked tirelessly with the Anti-Social Investigators and Housing Officers and have attended to carry out warnings to those causing concern and I'm aware the council have written to all residents to advise them of our action."

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service were being called to the flats to deal with fires and due to this, the local community safety officer, James Scott, teamed up with police officers to carry out some additional crime prevention work.

PC Welsh added: "Last week we supported James Scott from the fire service in delivering Crimestoppers leaflets which we hope will encourage people to call the police with information of anyone who continues to conduct themselves in an anti-social manner or set fires.

"I want anyone facing difficulties in the area to call the police on 101 to report the matter.

"You can also call 0800 555 111 anonymously to provide information of who is involved and we can work together to deal with issues before it becomes a bigger issue."
