A NEW mural has been unveiled at Glasgow's Pollokshaws, celebrating the area's Flemish history.

Located on Ashtree Road, the painting was created by Glasgow-based public art organisation ArtPistol Projects and funded by Home Group Scotland.

The art installation celebrates the 19th-century Flemish weavers, who populated the are centuries ago.

Ali Smith, from ArtPistol Projects, said: “We’re very happy with the wall and how it works in the space. The area has a strong history of weaving and the piece takes influence from the Flemish weavers who came to the area in the 1800s.

“Combining a contemporary weave pattern with the darkly lit flower paintings done by the Flemish at the time.

"The flowing weave represents the movement of people and the knitting together of a community, while connecting the buildings. I hope people will enjoy it being there.”

Carina Craig, an Ashtree Road resident, said: “It definitely brightens the place up.

"I was a bit sceptical at first as didn't know what it was supposed to be, but after finding out about the background I have a better understanding now.

“It’s important to recognise history because I think the younger generations don't really understand how the older generations have grown up; it’s nice that there are places to go whereby we can teach our kids about the place they live in and what it was like in past times.”
