THOUSANDS of Glasgow school children have pledged their support for the Bank on Us toy appeal this Christmas.

Youngsters across the city have vowed to do their bit for their peers who face waking up without a gift under the tree this December 25.

Pupils as young as five have been busily spending their last few weeks of school before the festive holidays gathering gifts for those in need after the release of the Glasgow Times recyclable paper donation bags earlier this month.

So far, dozens of Glasgow City Council schools, including Our Lady of the Rosary and Pollokshields primaries, have already set up their own toy drive to help bring in donations for the Bank on Us campaign.

Later this week, gifts will be delivered into the hands of hard-working charity staff who will distribute the thoughtful gifts to thousands of children who need an extra helping hand after another year of tough coronavirus restrictions.

Meanwhile, some schools will receive gifts themselves to donate to pupils before the Christmas break.

Last year, teachers revealed how both they and parents had been moved to tears as the weight of delivering presents this Christmas was lifted by kind-hearted readers supporting the Bank on Us campaign.

Speaking previously, council leader Susan Aitken said: Council leader Susan Aitken said: “It is comforting to know that Glasgow Times readers all over the city are doing what they can to give children in their communities a Christmas to look forward to.

“Their generosity is never in doubt; but it might never be more important, or appreciated more keenly, than it will be this Christmas.”

As previously reported, supporters can deliver new gifts to their local participating toy bank - a full list of which, including opening times and donation deadlines, can be found on the Glasgow Times website - ahead of the big day.

Meanwhile, those who would prefer to offer a cash donation in a bid to avoid the shops can do so via our Bank on Us GoFundMe page.

All monies raised will be used to purchase toys and gifts for Glasgow’s most vulnerable children, which will then be donated to charities, nurseries, and schools across the city who will distribute the presents prior to December 25.
