THOUSANDS more toys have been raised for youngsters across Glasgow by incredible school children.

Kids from Shawlands Primary filled around 300 recyclable Glasgow Times bags as part of the Bank on Us toy appeal.

Each of the gifts will now be shared with charities, toy banks, nurseries and even other schools ahead of December 25 to ensure no child goes without on Christmas Day.

Pupils went all out with a range of toys, books, puzzles and games to help kids in need this festive season.

Little ones explained how they “just wanted to help” struggling families after a year of tough coronavirus restrictions, which saw millions of pupils out of school for months.

Now, as the kind-hearted youngsters prepare for their Christmas break, they’re doing their bit for those in need.

Mrs Wright, the school’s headteacher, said children had been working hard over the last few weeks to prepare the gifts.

She said: “The children were all really excited to take part and began organising their donations straight away.

“People are always hugely generous, even though it’s difficult at this time of year.

“People always pull out all the stops and share what they’ve got with others. We’ve got about 250 to 300 bags back so it’s been really successful.”

She added: “We explain to the children that it’s about sharing what we’ve got with some kids who don’t have as much and they’re always so keen to get involved and help.”

Shawlands is one of dozens of Glasgow schools getting behind the Bank on Us 2021 appeal. As reported yesterday, St Timothy’s Primary in the East End also raised hundreds of presents for young people in need this festive period.

Meanwhile, our sponsor Storage Vault has several other collections planned over the next few days to make sure presents are tucked safely under Christmas trees in time for the big day.

Councillor Chris Cunningham, city convener for education, skills and early years, said: “Once again our schools are delighted to support the Glasgow Times’ Christmas toy appeal and it is heartening to hear that they’ve had a magnificent response from the people of Glasgow.

“We’ve all experienced such a challenging two years but we all know how kind, generous and compassionate our citizens are and will always find reserves to support each other.”

Several of our toy bank partners are still continuing to accept donations, with some remaining open until Christmas Eve. A full list of participating toy banks, including opening times, is available on the Glasgow Times website.

Unfortunately, due to coronavirus safety concerns, all gifts must be newly bought, meaning pre-loved toys cannot be accepted.

Today is your last chance to make a cash donation to the GoFundMe page. Altogether our fundraising drive has raised almost £10,000 so far.

All monies raised will be used to purchase toys and gifts for children, from infants to teenagers, ahead of the big day.
