EDUCATION bosses have moved to reassure parents of a "zero tolerance" approach to violence in schools after a video of an alleged assault went viral.

And Glasgow City Council has asked that people do not gather for a planned protest outside the school in question.

It comes after mobile phone footage of an apparent attack by a teenage girl on her classmate was widely shared.

Police Scotland said a 14-year-old girl has been charged in connection with the incident on December 7.

A family member of the victim involved has called for other parents to join a protest outside the secondary school on Monday.

He said that the girl had been taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital for treatment to injuries.

But the council has said to "reduce the transmission of the virus" parents should not congregate outside the Southside school.

A Glasgow City Council spokeswoman said: “All our schools operate a zero tolerance approach to violence of any sort and will follow the correct processes to deal with situations in schools.

“A pupil has been charged in relation to the assault in this case and the young person has been excluded by the school as a result of their own investigation.

“There was no sustained campaign of bullying in this case and the school has been very supportive before the incident using restorative methods to try and resolve the issue between both pupils."

A social media post from the victim's family claimed the girl, also 14, was knocked unconscious in the attack but it is understood no ambulance attended at the school.

The council said work is being undertaken to resolve the issue in the school.

The council spokeswoman added: “Since the incident, the school has been in constant communication with the family to find a solution that will meet the needs of the young people.

“However, with the reintroduction of the covid restrictions to help reduce the transmission of the virus, we would urge parents to not gather and protest outside the school at this time, but reassure them that the school are doing all that they can to resolve this issue.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “A 14-year-old girl has been charged in connection with an assault on another 14-year-old girl which happened at a school in Glasgow around 3.20pm on Tuesday, December, 7 2021.”
