A VANDALISED outdoor learning classroom has risen from the ashes thanks to donations from local businesses.

The Glasgow Times told last January how the well-used Wallacewell Primary facility was burned to the ground by thugs.

Pupils were left devastated by the attack on their school.

On seeing the impact the damage caused to the Robroyston primary, construction firm City Building vowed to rebuild the space in the hope of nurturing the children’s love of the outdoors.

Alan Burns, Executive Director of City Building, said: “On behalf of my colleagues at City Building, we are very proud to be a part of this project with Rexel.

"The destruction of the original classroom was mindless, but it is heartening to see the excitement of Wallacewell Primary School's children as the new outdoor classroom takes shape.”

Despite delays in construction due to shortages of materials amid the pandemic, the build has been completed.

Acting headteacher Jane Lobjoie and pupils of Wallacewell Primary School were joined by City Building and Rexel UK Ltd for a grand opening.

Glasgow Times:

Rexel, a wholesale electrical provider, works closely with the construction firm as a supplier of smoke and fire alarms, which City Building’s workforce install in the homes of Wheatley Housing Group customers and those of other housing associations.

Both parties covered the cost of construction, with Rexel’s secondary role in the project to highlight the devastation fires can cause.

Councillor Allan Casey, a former apprentice joiner at City Building, also pitched in to help by supporting current apprentices through the erecting of the timber frame during its construction.

Allan said: “It is my pleasure to support City Building in their efforts to rebuild the lost outdoor learning classroom for pupils at Wallacewell Primary School.

Glasgow Times: Pupils enjoy the new classroom

"I hope that this classroom will inspire a love of nature in the children, and will encourage them to explore the environment around them.”

Miranda Greene, Key Account Manager at Rexel UK Ltd, added: “Rexel working in conjunction with City Building are very happy to support the rebuild of the Wallacewell Primary School Outdoor Learning Classroom.”

In August this year we told how vandals attacked the play area in Wallacewell.

Shocking images showed the kids' play pit ripped up with debris scattered across a nearby road.

But, in happier news, the school was also recently visited by the Duchess of Rothesay.

Camilla presented them with a copy of It's Up To Us, a new children's climate change book.
