THERE'S no putting the brakes on young cyclist Minsa Khan after she trumped 5000 others to win this year's road safety calendar competition.

The nine-year-old from Lorne Street Primary School was rewarded with a new bike for her success in the annual battle to design the top safety message.

Primary school pupils compete each year in the challenge, which is organised through the Junior Road Safety Officer Scheme.

Councillor Anna Richardson, City Convener for Sustainability and Carbon Reduction, presented the prizes along with Lorne Street head teacher Alex Nicolson.

Anna said: “This is a fantastic competition that gets young pupils all across Glasgow thinking and talking about road safety.

"Unfortunately the competition couldn’t go ahead in 2020 because of the impact of covid, but it’s come back this year and the standard of entries was as high as its always been.

"Whittling down thousands of entries to one winner is never an easy job, but Minsa’s design tapped right into the growing mood about cycling in the city."

The Junior Road Safety Officer Scheme sees two P6 or P7 pupils from every primary school across the city getting directly involved in promoting road safety awareness in their school and wider community.

With the strapline "Cycling’s green and it keeps our world clean", Minsa’s calendar was judged to perfectly highlight the push for improved road safety and how cycling can help to protect the environment.

A P5 pupil at Lorne St Primary School in Kinning Park, Minsa will also receive a new helmet as part of her prize.

The junior road safety officers at Lorne St Primary, Muhammed Malek and Maria Djelil, also received gift vouchers for their role in organising the competition at the school.

Anna added: “We want to see more people cycling throughout the city as this will help to reduce the carbon impact of our transport system.

"But we also want to make sure people can cycle in the city as safely as possible and that’s why we are developing a plan for an active travel network across all of Glasgow. Minsa’s calendar showed off perfectly the city’s ambitions for safe cycling and was a worthy winner.

"Minsa was delighted with her prize and I really hope it’s the beginning of many years of enjoyable active travel for her.”
