A GLASGOW nightclub has accused the government of 'holding them to ransom' after they had to cancel their Hogmanay party.

The Shed cancelled their Shednanigans Night Bar Hogmanay 2021 event just five hours before they were due to open after they were told they would not qualify for any proposed nightclub financial aid if they opened.

Under current restrictions, which came into force on December 26, nightclubs have had to close for a period of at least three weeks.

The Langside Avenue venue was due to open last night at one-eighth of its usual capacity, but a post on social media said the "last minute change of the goalposts" made that impossible.

Posting on Facebook, The Shed said they were "gutted" to announce the cancellation and all tables will be refunded.

They also said everyone who had a booking will have free guest list to the nightclub when it fully reopens.

The Shed's post on Facebook read: "We are gutted to announce that we are having to cancel Shednanigans Hogmanay 2021.

"We have been told five hours before we open that if we open tonight we will not qualify for any proposed nightclub financial aid.

"We cannot believe the Shed, our staff and our customers are in this position where we are effectively being held to ransom by our own government.

"We were due to open tonight at 1/8th capacity to give our customers and staff some degree of normality, however this last minute change of the goalposts has made that impossible to do.

"We know that this will ruin your plans we’re truly sorry but we have to look after our staff and suppliers and going forward without any assistance is not a chance we’re in a position to take.

"We will refund all tables for tonight, and everyone who had a booking tonight will have free guest list to the first night the Shed fully reopens as a nightclub.

"We hope you understand.

"Team Shed."

The club, which is based in Shawlands, previously advertised Shednanigans Night Bar as a table service event with only six people allowed per table.

Each table cost £150 and included a bottle of vodka, mixers and a jug of Shed venom on arrival.
