Positive coronavirus cases in Glasgow have rocketed over Christmas, according to the latest public health figures.

The number of people in hospital with Covid 19 has also more than doubled since Christmas Eve but intensive care numbers have remained low.

In the seven days up to December 28, the latest available period, there were 10,627 positive cases reported in the city.

For the previous seven days, up to December 21, the number was 6259, meaning cases increased by 70 percent over Christmas.

For Scotland overall, the increase was 62.5 percent from 46,694 to 75,860.

The latest daily statistics for Scotland show that there were more than 20,000 positive tests recorded yesterday, January 2, the highest number so far throughout the pandemic.

There were 1,031 people in hospital on Sunday across Scotland with recently confirmed Covid-19 and 38 patients with Covid were in intensive care.

In Greater Glasgow and Clyde health board area there were 334 people in hospital yesterday with confirmed Covid-19 up from 172 a week earlier more than double the 160 who were in hospital on December 24.

There are six people in intensive care in Greater Glasgow with Covid 19, which has remained stable since before Christmas when it was five.

The huge increase in positive cases and people in hospital has not, so far, led to a corresponding rise in intensive care patients.

In January 2021, intensive care patients in Greater Glasgow hit a high of 49 patients when the weekly total for positive cases in the area was around 3000 and hospital patients with covid reached 566.

A total of 4,383,212 people in Scotland have received their first dose of a Covid-19 vaccination, 4,017,051 have received their second dose, and 2,992,583 have received a third dose or booster.

The daily data for January 1 and January 2 was also published on Monday.

A total of 17,065 new cases were reported on January 1 and 14,080 were reported for January 2.
