THERE is just over a week left to give feedback on the first phase of the £68 million development of Shawlands Arcade.

Shawlands and Strathbungo Community Council has agreed to assist in gathering local views on the overhaul of the Kilmarnock Road focal point.

Plans for the renovation were unveiled last year and include the building of a new shopping and leisure quarter alongside housing units.

Owned by Clydebuilt LP, Shawlands Arcade was erected in the 1960s but the community has been calling for improvements to the shopping centre for a number of years.

The community council issued a call for opinions to be submitted ahead of a deadline of January 16.

It said: "As part of the ongoing consultation into regeneration proposals for Shawlands Arcade, its owners would like to understand community views on the design and use of new public spaces within both phase 1 and the completed proposals.

"A planning application is yet to be submitted so this is your opportunity to influence this increased area of public realm.

"The community council has agreed to gather feedback."

The community council is looking for locals to provide images or links to images of popular or admired public spaces.

It added: "Lighting, Planting, Materials, Seating Designs, Public Art, Performance Spaces, Play Spaces, Installations; in fact any ideas you like.

"The areas proposed are substantial – with the final central area being about half the size of the existing public realm outside Langside Halls."

A proposal for the centre comes in two stages and sees 300 new homes planned as part of the first phase.

Developers say the work will create 120 construction and retail jobs with on-street retail units created and wide pavement areas to allow outdoor cafe seating.

Locals have already begun to give their ideas on the proposals with a call for public toilets proving an important addition so far.

Parking is also an area of concern for residents, given current congestion levels in the area.

And other suggestions include the addition of wildflower areas, green walls that see plants growing along them, and a children's play park.

Shawlands Arcade was bought by Clydebuilt Limited Partnership, a joint venture between Strathclyde Pension Fund and Scottish property experts Ediston Real Estate, in 2016.

At the time, the then-Strathclyde Pension Fund chairman Philip Braat, who is now the city's Lord Provost, said the centre was in a "fairly tired looking condition" and hopes were high for the regeneration of the mall.
