IF you’ve just moved into a new home and are staring at a blank canvas, it can be easy to feel overwhelmed when it comes to decorating and adding your own style.

You may also find that some rooms are trickier than others, from being too small, too big, or having little quirks to them.

Finding design inspiration is easy though, even for the most inexperienced, you just need to know where to look.

Social media and online

There are endless resources online for finding design inspiration, from blogs, Pinterest, home interior accounts on Instagram and companies that specialise in offering interior design services. From people that have taken on massive home renovations projects to DIY amateurs looking to develop their skills, you’ll find a style that matches yours, or even pushes your ambition.

Various social media platforms have great ways to keep track of all your ideas and styles that you like. With Pinterest, you can create boards for each room in your house and ‘pin’ images and posts that you like from other accounts to keep them all together. You can then refer back to your board when you’re out shopping or ordering samples. With Instagram, you can follow accounts that have styles that inspire you or even of those that are on the same design journey. You can also find accounts of people that have similar properties to yours so that you can see how they have been renovated or restored.

YouTube is a great resource if you’re looking for DIY tips, with plenty of helpful guides ranging from experts, to those learning as they go, just like you.  Give wall panelling a go or try your hand at colour blocking, or even tips on how to upcycle furniture – there’s a video for everything.

TV shows

Based on the number of TV shows there are, we are all obsessed with everything home related, from DIY to architecture and design.  Whatever you’re interested in, whether it’s looking for some inspiration on how to style your bedroom, to building your own home from scratch, there’s a show to suit you. From Grand Designs to George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces, and even the return of our favourite 90s makeover show, Changing Rooms.

If you’re struggling with how to style your home, we’d recommend Interior Design Masters, which follows the journey of several amateur interior designers and various challenges each week. Think Bake Off but for interior design. And not forgetting our favourite, Scotland’s Home of the Year. Not just a great show for design ideas, and to have a nosey in people’s homes, it’s also a great tour around Scotland.

Of course, it doesn’t need to be a home makeover show to inspire you, you can take ideas from even your favourite series. Like Carrie Bradshaw’s shoe closet or Monica and Rachel’s purple living room.

Friends and family

Inspiration can be a lot closer to home if you check out the homes of your friends and family. You may find that they have similar style to you or have tried their hand at DIY projects that they could give you advice on. People love to brag about recent bargains and give recommendations so go armed with a notepad and pen. You may want to avoid copying their home completely and risk a huge falling out though!

Show homes

New build show homes will have been designed to show off their full potential, so why not trust the experts? Next time you have a free day, why not take a visit around new build developments near you and pop into the show homes? You can even ask the salesperson where items were purchased.

Fashion

A lot of the latest interior trends take their inspiration from the fashion industry, and vice versa. From the hippest patterns, accessories, and the most popular colours, you may find that the best ideas are hidden in your wardrobe. Trends come in and out of style, just like fashion, so don’t be scared to look back a few years, or even a few decades. Don’t discard old furniture, give it a new lease of life instead. Don’t throw away that old Persian rug. Just because it doesn’t fit in one room, doesn’t mean it can’t find a home somewhere else in the house.

Talk to friends and family about the vibe you are trying to achieve and if they have old pieces of furniture hidden away in storage that could take up residence with you. One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.

Design is all about experimenting, so be daring with colour, patterns, and textures too. Play around with illusions by making rooms look wider with horizontal stripes; making rooms look longer with solid feature walls, and bring elements of nature indoors with wooden slats, woven rugs, and plants.
