GLASGOW residents have hit out over an apparent lack of gritting in the city despite the heavy snowfall.

Locals have taken to social media to claim that several areas of the road have not been gritted by the council after the Met Office issued a yellow warning for snow and ice in the city.

One concerned resident wrote: "Where did they actually grit? Having the Springburn slip road off the M8 Westbound open today is total lunacy, it's bad enough when it rains."

Another said: "None of the priority routes around schools have been done."

One Twitter user commented: "Nowhere in the North seems to be gritted at all I have already seen at least two accidents and never made it more than a mile from my home."

Someone claimed that there was no grit around Glasgow Central Station while another said that none of the roads in Parkhead were gritted, including London Road.

A commuter posted: "You have gritted nothing. Absolute treacherous drive to work. Not one road gritted."

Residents appear to agree that most parts of the city were not gritted, despite Glasgow City Council tweeting that they had gritters out ahead of the Met Office yellow warning.

Their tweet said: "The Met Office has issued a yellow warning forecasting snow and ice overnight and in the morning so our gritters will be out during the night and first thing."

A Glasgow City Council spokesperson said that they did begin gritting main roads early this morning and have had to adapt to dealing with more snow than had been forecast.

A spokesperson said: “Main road gritting commenced at 1am on Friday and will continue today and this evening.

"Also, pavement and cycleway gritting commenced at 5am on Friday with access routes to schools, vaccination and test centres as well as main shopping areas being treated.

"We posted the Met Office yellow warnings on our social media channels last night to forewarn people of the potential issues for commuters this morning.

"The snow that began in the early hours of this morning has been more widespread than originally forecast and this has made things more difficult but we adapted the plan to tackle this with all available gritting resources out and will continue to be deployed as required.

"This morning's specialist road forecast is for the snow to stop by 10am but it will remain cold throughout Friday before becoming less cold with rain from the early hours of Saturday morning.

"Main road gritting commenced at 1am on Friday and will continue today and this evening. Also, pavement and cycleway gritting commenced at 5am on Friday with access routes to schools, vaccination and test centres as well as main shopping areas being treated.”
