GLASGOW University is marking its 571st birthday today.

The oldest of three universities in the city celebrated the landmark occasion on social media.

There were many reactions from former students, with one commenting: Happy birthday from Norway, class of 89!” and another said: “Happy birthday my alma mater.”

Another wrote that they were “very proud” of their university.

University Principal Anton Muscatelli wrote on Twitter that on January 7, 1451, when Pope Nicholas V issued a papal bull to establish the university.

He added that the university ‘began life’ on High Street in the city centre before moving to the current location in the city’s West End in 1870.

Glasgow University is the oldest in the city and has numerous notable alumni, including inventor John Logie Baird, singer Emeli Sande, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon and Gerard Butler, who studied law before venturing into acting.
