A MAN carried out a "terrifying" attack on two female police officers who were so scared by the assault they hit a panic button.

Brian Barr's defence lawyer said his client was drunk and distressed because his stepfather had died.

Depute fiscal Ryan Watson told Glasgow Sheriff Court details of the incident on October 5, 2020 shortly before 1am.

Cops were called out to Barr's Knightswood home because neighbours heard arguing and wrongly thought it was a domestic dispute.

Two officers arrived at the flat and were refused entry by the 38-year-old so they moved to arrest him.

As one officer removed her handcuffs and took hold of Barr's right wrist, telling him he was under arrest.

Mr Watson said: "At this point he forcibly pushed PC McAteer and this caused her to fall backwards against the bedroom wall.

"The accused then turned and grabbed PC Macleod's hair from behind and pushed her.

"Due to the aggressive struggle PC McAteer pushed the emergency button on her air wave radio."

Officers finally managed to place handcuffs on Barr and took him to Clydebank police station where he was released in order to attend the funeral.

Barr's defence brief said: "Police were called because of some shouting that had taken place that was thought to have been between Mr Barr and his partner.

"It was in the course of a phone call to somebody else.

"His conduct that day was far from impressive because he had taken a great deal of drink."

The lawyer explained that Barr was very close to his stepfather, who had died, and the incident had occurred the night before the funeral.

Sheriff Diana McConnell said: "It must have been terrifying for the police officers to be pushed and have their hair pulled to the extent they had to active the emergency buttons on their radios and I take a serious view of that behaviour.

"I have to take account of the fact you do have a record and a record for public disorder."

Barr was placed on a community payback order with 12 months supervision and ordered to carry out 126 hours of unpaid work within that time.

For a breach of bail charge he was admonished and dismissed.
