Tomorrow will see a number of covid restrictions on hospitality, night clubs and indoor events eased across Scotland.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has confirmed that many of the temporary restrictions, which were implemented around Christmas time to limit the spread of the Omicron variant, will be lifted as of Monday, January 24.

Limits on hospitality including mandatory table service and one metre distancing within groups will no longer apply.

After a forced closure of almost one month, nightclubs across the city will once again be able to open their doors.

The current limit for numbers attending outdoor events (100 for standing and 200 for seated) are to be scrapped as well as the ban on indoor non-professional contact sports.

Finally, the guidance limiting gatherings to a maximum of three households will cease as of tomorrow, although it is still suggested that the public keep their social events as “small as our circumstances allow”.

Speaking at Holyrood the First Minister said: "Although significant pressures and uncertainties do remain, the data nevertheless gives us confidence that we have turned the corner on the Omicron wave.

“A combination of booster vaccinations, the willingness of the public to adapt their behaviour to help stem transmission, and the temporary protective measures introduced in December, has helped blunt the impact of the Omicron wave.”

Despite the easing of these restrictions in the above-listed areas, the current rules of vaccine passports, masks in public places and self-isolation will remain the same.

There will, however, be no extension to the vaccine passport scheme despite this having previously been discussed as a possibility.

Ms Sturgeon said: “Given that cases are now falling quite rapidly, and the current wave is receding, we decided that we will not at this stage extend the Covid certification scheme to other premises.”

People will continue to be asked to work from home whenever possible, with employers asked to facilitate this.

However, the Scottish Government said they plan to engage with businesses now about a return to a more hybrid approach from the start of February - if case numbers continue to decline.
