POLITICIANS have warned that a dangerous building in Glasgow could cause a fatality if it is not made safe.
Alarming images show a pane of smashed glass dangling from a window of the empty premises at 1479 Paisley Road West.
Local representatives fear that the building – believed to have been lying vacant for four years – is still being used by members of the public.
They warn that if it is not secured soon, it could result in death or serious injury. The councillors want the owners, Peakquote Lt, to take urgent action on sealing the block
off.
SNP representative Elaine McSporran said: “The health and safety of the community is of the utmost priority and the danger of the broken window imposes a threat of serious injury or at worst, a
fatality.
“The owners must now take responsibility and secure the entire building.”
Council teams have moved in over the years to secure the site by boarding up windows and clearing the broken glass.
The Glasgow Times understands that the building was previously set for demolition, however, works were halted for an unknown
reason.
Now, the representatives have warned that they will request further action to be taken by Glasgow City Council to enforce safety actions if the owners do not respond.
This means that the local authority could issue a compulsory purchase order of the site.
SNP councillor Alex Wilson said: “We understand the challenges emergency services face in keeping anti-social behaviour from happening in the building.
“However, this is now a serious concern and action must be taken by the owners to ensure the safety of the community.”
Glasgow City Council confirmed that its building standards teams have been called out to visit the building on a few occasions in recent years.
The Glasgow Times attempted to contact Peakquote Ltd, however, the firm was unreachable.
Police Scotland was contacted for comment.
