A popular student accommodation building will continue to operate for the next three years despite having to deal with more than 100 electrical faults in 2021.

PBSA the owners of Buchanan View, which sits at 33 to 35 Calgary Street, submitted a renewal of their HMO licence (House In Multiple Occupation) to Glasgow City Council’s licensing committee recently.  The property was inspected in relation to the HMO application in May last year, at which time revealed an issue with the electrical system – rendering the flats to be in an unsafe condition.

During Wednesday’s licensing committee members were informed that these defects had now all been addressed and a minor work certificate issued by the applicant’s electrical contractor.

A council officer said: “Everything else is all in order and we have received no complaints during the period of the previous licenses held by the applicant.”

The block of buildings which has 665 rooms were first constructed as student accommodation in October 2003.

John Stevenson, from PBSA, said: “Every five years we have a fixed electrical test carried out on the building and that usually gives us some remedial work to go after.

“Contractors will resolve anything that is deemed as an immediate risk there and then. There were 112 issues raised which we then fixed but that took too long.

“Everything has been completed and the building is now fully compliant.”  Following the review, members agreed to grant the licence.
