A Glasgow City councillor has died suddenly, at the age of 49.

Gary Gray, Labour councillor for Canal ward, in the north of Glasgow, passed away on Sunday.

Mr Gray had been a councillor in the city twice. Firstly, for Milton from 2003 to 2006 and then elected again for Canal ward in 2017.

The Glasgow Labour group announced today, Councillor Gray had died.

A statement said: “We are deeply saddened by the news that our comrade and colleague Gary Gray has passed away suddenly.

“Gary was a committed socialist who loved being a Councillor representing the Canal ward.

“Our thoughts continue to be with Gary’s friends, family, all those who knew & loved him.”

Colleagues said he had been out in the city campaigning just days before he died.

Councillors from other parties have spoken of their sadness and expressed their sympathy with Mr Gray’s family, colleagues  and friends.

Mhairi Hunter , SNP  councillor, said it was “Really sad news and my thoughts are with you all, Gary’s family and friends. He was always a really powerful voice in the Chamber and will be sorely missed.”

Thomas Kerr, Conservative group leader, said:  “I know I speak for my entire group when I say Gary will be deeply missed by us all - he was such a joy to work with and a real champion for his community.

“I'm sending my love and thoughts to you all at this very difficult time.”
