Billy Connolly has shared the story of why he chose to move from New York to Florida.

The much loved Glasgow comedian was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 2013 and has since been forced to quit performing live comedy shows.

Speaking with the Mirror, he has now revealed that living with the disease was the catalyst for his move to a warmer climate.

He said: “I lived in New York, and I loved it, in Manhattan, but in winter it becomes an ice rink, and I like to walk everywhere.

“I just couldn’t balance it anymore. I had to get out of there.”

This conversation comes ahead of the Big Yin's new TV series called "Billy Connolly Does..." which is due to air soon.

The programme will give viewers an insight into how Connolly spends his days in his Florida home.

While it seems he chooses to dedicate a lot of his time fishing or drawing, he has made it clear that much of his current happiness comes from a life shared with his wife, Pamela.

In a clip from the programme, he said: "She’s incredibly bright and she can do four things at once. And she can speed-read. And she knows how you buy a house, I haven’t a clue.

"It works out brilliantly and she knows how to look after the children, how to get them into school and out of school and into the world.

“She does all of that and I smile in the background and say funny things from time to time.

“It’s a sin, really. I’ve been looked after by managers and people all my life.

“And now it’s Pamela and the children.”

Billy Connolly Does... will air on Gold this Thursday evening at 9pm
