CASTLEMILK will have a “household name” supermarket at a local shopping centre.

The Braes is set to receive a share in a £3.7m government grant as part of a project to improve nine communities across Glasgow.

For decades, shoppers in this area of the city have called for a new supermarket.

The area only has one Iceland and one Farmfoods store, selling mainly frozen and packaged food.

A Co-op store is also available, but locals say many cannot afford to shop there.

Scotsman Group, the new name of G1, who owns the shopping centre, had applied for the funding, which councillors approved on Thursday, February 24.

The “household name supermarket” is currently commercially confidential but other plans are also in the pipeline for the shopping centre.

The Braes will see environmental improvements, including "enhanced public realm" and better permeability, which will stimulate the local economy and help small retail businesses, encouraging further commercial development.

Councillor Susan Aitken, leader of Glasgow City Council, said: "As a Southside councillor, I'm particularly pleased to see the commitment to the Braes Shopping Centre in Castlemilk.

"This is a game-changer, a final piece of the investment jigsaw that will allow for the development of a household name supermarket and make a huge positive difference to the area.

"The Castlemilk community has pushed for this for decades - it knew what it needed and why and the City Government has been supportive of local efforts to deliver that. A big well done to all those who have campaigned for this."

She added: "After a difficult couple of years, this is really welcome series of investments which can help unlock the potential across many of Glasgow's neighbourhoods.

"From community kitchens and new growing spaces to new active travel links, these nine projects will benefit communities in every corner of the city, helping our residents to better appreciate their local areas.

The Castlemlik scheme is one of nine community projects which will share £3.7m from the Scottish Government’s Place Fund.

Other projects recommended to receive money include the redevelopment of Tollcross Winter Gardens and a community supermarket in Nitshill.

The Place Fund is a capital fund for local authorities to allocate, working collaboratively with local communities, to develop projects under a variety of themes.

These include 20-minute neighbourhoods, town centre regeneration, community-led regeneration and community wealth building; achieving net-zero; and well-being and inclusive economic development.
