A LOCAL supermarket has helped a social club established in 1957 celebrate a milestone birthday.

The White Heathers Club recently marked their 65th birthday with tea, cakes and party treat supplied by Asda Toryglen Community Champion, Elizabeth Arbuckle.

The Asda worker has been supporting the group of 45 pensioners for the last eight years through regular donations and support from the Asda Foundation.

Margaret Keenan, who has been a volunteer for almost 40 years, thanked the supermarket for their help. She said: “We do not receive any funding and rely solely on contributions from our members alongside the fantastic support from Asda. Elizabeth is a gem and looks after us, she has never said no yet!

“Without Asda’s generosity for refreshments and cakes, we would really struggle to provide for our members.

"Elizabeth is a star and not only donates goods but also her time. We love to see her every week and she has been a real support and friend of our Club. This Club is enjoyed by many, and we need more than ever after lockdown, to have the opportunity to meet again and have fun.”

Some members of The White Heathers are over 90 years old and Margaret made sure they were well looked after throughout the pandemic. The club has been a 'lifeline' to members since it was formed.

Elizabeth Arbuckle said: “I love this club and am so glad to be able to support them, I really look forward to seeing them every week. Clubs like this are brilliant at motivating and providing support for the elderly in our community. After so long in isolation, it is great to them see chatting and dancing together again.”
