THERE will be an increase in the number of police patrols in the city centre this weekend in a crackdown on antisocial behaviour.

The force confirmed the Greater Glasgow Divisional Violence Reduction Unit will be working across the centre this weekend to deal with any criminal activity "robustly".

They will be working alongside dedicated offers who work with partners including Glasgow City Council and British Transport Police.

Officers said the increase in patrols is in response to current reports and concerns.

The Glasgow Times previously reported three teens were charged in connection with an assault on a 22-year-old man in St Enoch Square on Friday, February 25.

A man was also taken to hospital on Thursday, March 3 after he was seriously assaulted on Buchanan Street at around 3pm in an unprovoked attack.

While police say they recognise not all young people gathering in the city centre are causing problems, they are now calling on all parents to know where their kids are and let them know the impact any anti-social behaviour could have on others.

Chief Inspector Kelly, Area Commander for Glasgow City Centre said: "We understand that young people want to socialise and gather and the vast majority are well behaved and not causing any criminality.

"However, we do also recognise that the presence of a large number of people, of any age, can cause concern for communities and anti-social behaviour can easily escalate in these situations.

"We review and adapt our patrols in accordance with any current reports or concerns and I would encourage anyone to contact us to let us know of any issues.

"I would ask parents to know where their kids are and the impact anti-social behaviour has on others."
