HUNDREDS of people have shared their devastation after police named the tragic victim of a fatal crash in Shawlands.

We previously reported that George Jarvis was hit by a car on Kilmarnock Road on Friday, March 4.

The 69-year-old was taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, where he died three days later.

George was a well-known mechanic who ran his own garage in Pollokshaws.

Glasgow Times:

The community paid tribute to him after police named him yesterday.

One person said: "George was such a gentleman. When I used to take my car in he would show me photos of his daughters. He was such a proud and humble man, the best mechanic."

Another added: "I was so sad to hear what happened to George, I was speaking to him just two weeks ago getting my car fixed. We didn't talk about my car at all. He talked about his daughters, the apple of his eye. He talked about me, he remembered everything. He has looked after me and my cars for 20 years and I can't tell you how upset I have been to hear this devastating news. What a lovely man. I felt as though he was my friend, and he was. Will miss you George."

Someone wrote: "My whole family have been using George's garage because he was very honest and always done a great job...He was a pure gentleman, and will definitely be missed. RIP George."

Another added: "My family and I used George's garage for decades and would never go anywhere else. Always honest and decent and would do his very best for you. Had many a good chat with him. He was so proud of his girls. I think they were his life. Such a sad loss, to us normal folk, and to the motor trade."

Someone said: "RIP George, a great loss to the motor trade, last of the old school. Thinking of your family and friends."

Another commented: "I knew George years ago when I worked in Finlays in Shawlands. Such a lovely, kind man. Lots of love to the family."

Someone wrote: "George was such a gentleman, my condolences to his family. Used George for years for my cars and his twin girls were his life, so proud of them, sleep tight."

Police are appealing for witnesses following the crash.

Sergeant Adnan Alam, from the Greater Glasgow Road Policing Unit, said: “At this time, our thoughts remain with George’s loved ones, as they come to terms with their terrible loss.

“We are continuing our enquiries to establish the full circumstances of the incident and would ask anyone who has not yet come forward with information to get in touch with police.
