A FURIOUS mum claims that her son is receiving just a day and a half of school per week due to staff shortages as a result of Covid cases.

Susan Yuill from Sighthill said that parents received a letter late on Tuesday night from St Kevin's Primary School saying that they would be required to keep their children at home for three days per week until the Easter holidays in April.

The school is part of the Sighthill Community Campus which also houses St Stephen's Primary.

The Glasgow Times has obtained a copy of the letter which states the times and dates children are to be kept at home from school. Pupils will also finish at 1 pm on a Friday until April.

It is understood more than half of the school's teaching staff are currently absent due to Covid cases.

Susan said: "I work part-time for the NHS and I have had to use annual leave to look after my wee boy. We have not been given any support.

"What are single working mothers supposed to do with this? We have a duty to be at work but we have no childcare or schooling.

"They left it too late to put any childcare provision in place."

St Kevin's is a school for children who have additional support needs and Susan said that her son needs to have a routine or he gets upset. She added: "His routine is education and he is going to end up in a routine that means he isn't going to school and I am going to have to coax him back.

"This is vulnerable children with additional support needs, losing their education again when it wasn’t suppose to happen.

"It is concerning because they will effectively have five weeks off for the Easter holidays."

A spokesperson for Glasgow City Council said: “With the high numbers of positive cases in communities across the city there is no doubt that many of our schools are affected in some way with both pupils and staff self-isolating or who have the virus but we have not had to close any of our schools.

“We are extremely grateful to all of our staff for their flexibility and hard work in these challenging times.

“Staff and young people will be reminded to continue to follow the advice and guidance to help suppress the spread of the virus along with the mitigations already in schools to help achieve this too.”
