A food kitchen in Glasgow city centre has had equipment damaged after an incident.

The organiser said screens, that are erected for covid protection measures, were damaged and will cost hundreds of pounds to replace.

Several Police officers were called to the scene and a teenager was arrested in connection with the incident.

Colin McInnes, manager of Homeless Project Scotland, said volunteers were alarmed during the incident as they were setting up to serve meals.

He said: “We have never had anything like this before. It was upsetting for our volunteers many of who are young people, looking to help people.”

Mr McInnes has set up a just giving fundraiser appealing for help to replace the screens.

He added: “The cost of replacing the screens is money we could and should be spending on food and providing support for people who are in desperate need.”

The project operates the food kitchen under the Hielanman’s umbrella bridge at argyle Street three nights a week, serving hundreds of meals each week to people struggling with costs.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said:  "Around 7.15 pm on Tuesday, 22 March, 2022, police were called to a report of a disturbance and vandalism on Argyle Street under the Hielanman's Umbrella, Glasgow.

"A 16-year old female was arrested in connection with the incident and is the subject of a report to the relevant agency."
