HUNDREDS of commuters were stuck in "gridlocked" traffic in Glasgow's Southside this morning.

Drivers have hit out at the traffic "chaos" throughout several streets in Pollok, as a result of roadworks in the area and a closure nearby in Corkerhill.

A section of Corkerhill Road, south of its junction with Mosspark Drive, closed to traffic from today for six weeks.

One person contacted the Glasgow Times after being stuck in the long queues.

He said: "The road closures and the pointless cycle lanes in Pollok have created traffic chaos.

"Next to no one uses the cycle lanes on Brockburn and Braidcraft Road, but with the road closures at Corkerhill, these roads are now gridlocked!

"Stationary cars spewing pollution. I've already emailed the local MP and heard nothing back.

"The chaos has now led to kids being late for school and people not getting to work on time. And it'll be like this for the next SIX weeks."

Community Facebook page Crookston and Pollok Community warned local residents about the traffic.

They wrote: "Brockburn Road is gridlocked in both directions. Avoid it if you can. Affecting Linthaugh, Levernside, Leithland Road and Avenue, Stobcross, Beltrees and Kempthorn too."

Dozens of people commented. One person said: "Almost back to Braidcraft Road on Linthaugh Road too, left an hour early this morning and was still late!"

Another added: "Been sitting on Levernside for 15 mins. Already tried Linthaugh and Braidcraft. Only trying to get home from dropping my daughter at school!!"

Someone else wrote: "Something needs to be done about this chaos before road rage kicks in."

Several people shared photos of the long queues.

One person said: "Stupid bus lanes don't help, what was the point, never see bikes on it."

One parent wrote: "Absolute nightmare! Left at 8.40am to head to Crookston Castle from Old Pollok. Got to the school at 9.20am and just getting back home!"

Meanwhile, another parent said they ditched their car and walked instead.

The six-week closure at Corkerhill Road is to enable pipe installation work to be carried out.

In a statement on Scottish Water's website, they wrote: "We apologise for any inconvenience and thank affected road users in advance for their patience and understanding.

"We have liaised with Glasgow City Council while planning our work and road traffic management."

A Glasgow City Council spokesperson said: “We are aware of congestion on Corkerhill Road and other roads in Pollok this morning, which we understand to be linked to changes to arrangements for the roadworks in the area that have been underway for several weeks.

"We have asked that signage for diversions to these works to be made as prominent as possible to help drivers adjust to the change in traffic management arrangements.”
