A NEW café could open in Glasgow's Southside if plans are approved.

A planning application has been submitted asking to transform a former newsagents store at 1309 Pollokshaws Road.

The empty unit was formerly home to Pollokshaws Newsagents which closed a few years ago.

It occupies the ground floor of a four-storey red sandstone tenement building.

The proposed development hopes to offer a selection of cold foods, sandwiches, salads, healthy options, cakes and biscuits as well as a range of coffees, teas, soft drinks and alcoholic drinks.

A planning statement reads: "The only hot foods will be soups, toasties and pies, so any cooking will be in sealed appliances with no requirement for any external extraction system.

"The proposed change of use will see this vacant unit transformed into a small local café providing a local venue to meet and enjoy light meals and liquid refreshments.

"It will help to provide a community focus. In the evenings and in the winter the splay of light from the window will illuminate the footpath and help to create a sense of safety and security while animating the space."

It is anticipated that the café will operate between the hours of 8am-10pm, seven days a week.

The plans will be accepted or rejected by June 17.
