PUPILS at a school in Glasgow’s Southside put on an exciting performance of a Disney musical after being given the opportunity to learn and produce it.

Cleeves Primary, on Househillmuir Road, was the only school in Glasgow chosen to take part in a free programme, which is run by Disney Musicals in Schools and Scottish Opera.

It features Disney KIDS musicals, which are shorter stage adaptions of classic Disney stories written expressly for primary school performers.

On Thursday, the Southside pupils performed a version of The Lion King after months of hard work.

The programme aims to build skills and confidence in both pupils and teachers, encourage participation and collaboration, and leave a sustainable arts legacy for years to come, especially in schools that are actively seeking greater engagement with the arts.

Last year, the pupils started working with two music and drama artists from Scottish Opera’s Outreach and Education Department, with step-by-step workshops covering every aspect of casting, rehearsing, staging and performing a 30-minute long version of The Lion King.

The teaching artists guided pupils through music and movement. They also worked with staff to give them experience in singing, stage directing, choreography and stage management.

Hazel Sim, the headteacher at Cleeves Primary School, said: "I'd like to thank all the pupils, staff and families who have done an amazing job pulling together such a fantastic show.

"As a school, we are delighted to have had the opportunity to showcase the expressive arts giving our children the opportunity to explore drama, art and music in such a creative and inspiring way.

"Working alongside Andy and Martine, our teaching specialists from Scottish Opera, our staff and children have developed the skills and confidence to produce a show to an exceptionally high standard – they’ve set the bar high for future years!

"We are now looking forward to sharing this on stage at the Edinburgh Playhouse on Monday, June 13.  Thank you to Disney Musicals in Schools and Scottish Opera for all their support."
