A SUSPICIOUS device that closed a Glasgow recycling plant for several hours today was found to be a replica grenade.

As we exclusively told earlier, police were called to the Viridor recycling plant at Polmadie after the item was found on a conveyor belt.

Officers attended at the scene shortly after 11am and the centre was evacuated.

Glasgow Times:

The British Army's Explosive Ordnance Disposal arrived on the scene around 2pm.

Around 30 workers were outside the building, some sitting along the pavement and some decamped to a cafe across the street.

The front entrance of the plant was closed with customers being asked to go round to the back of the building.

A woman working nearby, who asked not to be named, said: "Nothing like this has happened before, this is the first time.

"It is quite exciting but I am not very phased, we just carry on."

Around 2.30pm workers were seen to be returning to the building.

Glasgow Times:

A spokesperson for Viridor said: "We are aware of the incident at our Glasgow facility at Polmadie this morning where a suspected explosive device was reported which we can now confirm has now been resolved.

"All colleagues are safe, and the site will resume normal operation as soon as possible."

A Police Scotland spokesperson confirmed the incident had been stood down after the device was safety removed from the site.
