A driver who crashed into a busy roundabout in Pollok admitted he had been drinking alcohol to cops.

Despite his admittance, Craig Kinder went on to refuse to provide a breath sample at Govan police office following the collision on December 23, 2021.

At Glasgow Sheriff Court last week, the prosecutor said: “At 2.10am, the accused was travelling on Brockburn Road at excessive speeds. He approached the roundabout with Barrhead Road.

“CCTV captured the events.

“He continued out of Brockburn Road without brake lights activating. He collided with the roundabout, which took the car right over the roundabout, resulting in him colliding with a pedestrian barrier.

“Police were contacted and attended.”

Officers saw Kinder, of Thornliebank, trying to put the vehicle’s front bumper back on when they arrived.

He told them: “Aye, me boys. I’ve f****d it, I’ve been drinking”.

He was taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital before being deemed fit to be in police custody.

The 41-year-old was taken to Govan police office to provide a specimen of breath, but he refused, stating: “I want a lawyer."

He was later released from custody.

The court heard Kinder is already subject to social work supervision and has completed all hours of an unpaid work order which was previously imposed.

His lawyer said: “This shows he can comply with court orders.

“He works in a supermarket and has responsibility for his son. This conduct was irresponsible and he’s lucky he didn’t hurt himself or anyone else.

“He wishes he complied fully at the police station as he made the terrible decision to make a bad situation even worse. He recognises that. He knows he will be disqualified.”

Sheriff Charles Lugton told Kinder: “This was very irresponsible behaviour. You are extremely fortunate that you or anyone else was not injured as a result.”

He was ordered to carry out 100 hours of unpaid work, be under social work supervision for nine months, and was disqualified from driving for one year, as a direct alternative to custody.
