A man who was driving under the influence in Glasgow was found to be six times over the legal limit.

Thomas Beckett was stopped for a routine document check on Kinmount Avenue in King's Park on December 30, 2020.

Police had cause to ask the 31-year-old to provide a specimen of breath, which he did. He was arrested and taken to Cathcart police office where a blood specimen was taken.

This showed Beckett, of Battlefield, was driving under the influence of Benzoylecgonine, which is the major metabolite of cocaine.

His lawyer explained he had received an urgent call from his parents on the day.

The defence solicitor added: “His mother suffers from dementia. He did not think he was unfit to drive as it was the next day.

“He is genuinely remorseful and is ashamed of his behaviour. He is working full-time. He has not been convicted of any crime since 2009.

“He has asked specifically if he could pay a fine as he also tends to his mother’s needs and is fully committed most weeks.

“I would also ask this, due to him not being in any trouble since. He pleaded guilty at the first diet.”

Sheriff Charles Lugton told Beckett: “It was a high reading. I accept the submission and I recognise this appears to be a one-off, however, you were substantially over the limit.”

He was banned from driving for 12 months and ordered to pay a £420 fine.
