A man was caught dealing drugs in a close in Sandyhills by undercover cops.

Ryan Quinn, 30, was standing with another person in the close on Balbeggie Street when officers in plain clothes walked in at 11.20am on June 17, 2020.

Cops believed a “transaction” to be taking place as they saw bank notes being passed and Quinn reaching out of his trousers and removing plastic bags from his boxers.

He was detained for a search.

Seven clear bags containing 170 blue tablets were found in his trouser pocket. Another six bags containing a total of 25 tablets were found as well as another bag containing 20 tablets.

Quinn was taken to a police office and made no reply when cautioned and charged.

Following analysis, the drugs were confirmed as Etizolam, also known as street valium. There was a total of 215 tablets, worth an estimated value of £100.

Quinn appeared at Glasgow Sheriff Court last week charged with being concerned in the supply of the controlled drug.

His lawyer said: “At the time, he was living in a flat by himself. He is a fairly vulnerable individual and has a number of mental health difficulties.

“He was identified by a neighbour in the block who recognised his vulnerability and got him involved in selling drugs, effectively on his behalf.

“He eventually moved out of that block following this incident.”

The court heard that Quinn is now living with his parents and has been free from drugs for 20 months.

His defence solicitor added: “He is working with addiction services and has not come to the attention of police at all since this matter.

“He intends to continue to live with his parents for the foreseeable future. They are extremely supportive of him.”

Sheriff Simone Sweeney told Quinn: “I’m satisfied there’s an alternative to custody.

“I will place you on a structured deferred sentence. You’ll work with social work and the case will call again in four months’ time. The court will have a report including what progress you have made.”

Quinn will return to court in October.
