Frustrated families in Johnstone have told how a children’s play park has been a “no-go zone” for years as a result of safety concerns.

Play equipment was installed by housing giant Persimmon as part of the Scholars Green development but has been sealed off for the past four years.

Concerns were raised about a hole in the ground at the site, in Hallhill Crescent, which has been covered over to allow safety checks to be made.

Johnstone dad Ralph Addison said his nine-year-old son Dylan and six-year-old daughter Eliza are keen to use the play area but, along with many other local children, are being let down by Persimmon.

Mr Addison, who works as a pilot on deep sea submersible vessels, also fears youngsters could force open the steel cover and suffer an injury.

He told our sister title The Gazette: “We are getting nowhere with Persimmon. It is a massive concern.

“My own two children managed to get into the site, which was really worrying. Other parents have the same fears for their kids.”

Councillor Iain McMillan, who represents the area, claims Persimmon have ignored his letters outlining concerns raised by constituents.

He said: “Even though this play area has never been opened, kids are getting through the fence and playing there.

“The site is also an eyesore because it is now overgrown and the grass hasn’t been cut for a long time.”

Work began on Scholars Green around six years ago and the last houses were completed shortly before the Covid pandemic struck.

The play area has swings, a roundabout and a climbing frame, none of which have ever been used.

Councillor McMillan added: “I recently wrote to Persimmon Homes to find out what is happening but I have received no reply.”

Kevin Rees, West Scotland construction manager for Persimmon, said he hopes the play park will be in use in the near future.

He added: “I want to thank local residents for their patience. The area has been thoroughly inspected and there is no shaft within the play park.

“We are working with the park developer and the factor to resolve the only remaining issue, which relates to the height of some stepping stones.

“Our customer care team will continue to keep residents updated and we hope to have some good news very soon.”
