Conservatives in Glasgow have reacted to Boris Johnson’s decision to finally quit as Prime Minister.

Former city Tory MSPs said he should go now and not attempt to hang on until the autumn, as he intends.

Adam Tomkins, former Glasgow Conservative MSP from 2016 to 2021, said someone not standing to be the new leader should take over as interim PM.

Making his views known on Twitter, Tomkins said: “I now have two wishes: First, that Boris leaves today and does not remain as acting or caretaker PM.

“He simply cannot be trusted. Second, that the party takes its time to find a new leader.

“We rushed it with May and again with Johnson. Didn’t end well either time.”

Ruth Davidson, former Glasgow MSP and ex-Scottish Tory leader, said it is “nonsense” for Johnson to remain as Prime Minister for months after announcing his intention to resign.

Johnson said he intends to remain as Prime Minister for months until the Conservatives hold a leadership contest and choose his successor.

Davidson said that is “arrant nonsense”.

Baroness Davidson, a former Glasgow MSP from 2011 to 2016, who now sits in the House of Lords, said he has to go sooner.

She said: “There's no way he can stay on until October. It's arrant nonsense to think he can. Someone needs to grip this.”

Previous Tory prime ministers have remained in office until a leadership contest is complete.

But with more than 50 resignations from his Government forcing him to quit he is being urged to leave office sooner.

A current Glasgow Tory MSP talked up achievements of Johnson during the pandemic but did not express a view on whether he should go now or later.

Sandesh Gulhane, Glasgow MSP, said: “Boris resigning was the only option.

“But let’s not forget procuring vaccines before other countries allowing us to be free.

“Leading through the pandemic with difficult decisions, Eat Out to Help Out and nationalising everyone’s jobs. Time for a fresh start for our country.”
