Post Office workers have taken strike action over pay as union leaders told management to “get serious” on an offer.

Communication Workers Union (CWU) members at Crown Post Offices across the UK, including in Glasgow, took part in a one-day strike today.

Around 1500 workers across the UK were involved in the action, which covered the larger Post Office branches including nine in Scotland and two in Glasgow.

The city centre branch in West Nile Street was affected but remained open, while Springburn was closed.

A notice on the West Nile Street branch stated customers might "experience delays" and  said other branches were open.

Glasgow Times:

The dispute is against Post Office management’s current pay offer of a 3% pay deal for the 2022-23 financial year, alongside a one-off lump sum payment of £500, and no pay increase for the 2021-22 financial year.

The members had delivered a 97.3% vote in favour of taking action.

Andy Furey, CWU assistant secretary, said: “The blame for this disruption lies entirely with the senior Post Office leadership, who have repeatedly failed – and wilfully refused – to set out a sensible and fair pay agreement.

“Everyone knows that the only solution is a fair pay rise that properly rewards members for their extraordinary efforts in serving the public and delivering a profitable Post Office, while also taking account of the extreme cost of living.

“There most certainly is money available, but management do not want to give workers their fair share.

“Our message to the employer today is: don’t waste our members’ time by misleading statements.

“Stop the spin and get serious about pay. Until you do this, the strikes will continue.”

Staff working in “supply chain and administrative” will strike again on Thursday, affecting the 11,500 sub-post offices across the UK.

The Post Office said 50% of branches were able to open.

A Post Office spokesperson said: “We can confirm that 57, which is half, of our directly managed branches have opened today.

“Strike action taking place on Thursday, July 14, is within our supply chain network and will not impact any of our 11,500 branches from opening as they would normally.”
