A union rep has filmed himself in a foul-mouthed video message urging members to vote to reject a pay offer.

Chris Mitchell, GMB convenor for Glasgow’s cleansing workers, recorded a clip encouraging members to take part in the ballot, while dancing to a techno track and shouting and swearing, advocating rejecting the offer.

A spokesperson for the union said it was "aware of the clip" and stated it was a "personal communication to a private group which has went further".

Mr Mitchell has been spearheading a campaign for improved pay and conditions for the city’s cleansing workers.

GMB Scotland is currently balloting around 10,000 members in waste and recycling, schools and early years for industrial action.

The ballot is due to close on July 27.

Glasgow Times:

Mr Mitchell regularly posts videos of himself on social media campaigning on behalf of members, demanding councils and Government act on concerns.

In a 44-second video, seen by the Glasgow Times, which appears to be filmed in a house, he is dancing, waving his arms around and shouting at the camera.

As the music plays, on a TV behind him with an image of an animated clown, he shouts: “Cleansing.”

He carries on: “Get your ballot in. Get your f*****g ballot in.”

The convenor refers to the offer, made by employers’ body Cosla, which he calls on his members to reject.

He shouts: “Come on. You know you deserve better. Two percent my a**e.

“Come on, get your f*****g ballot in you c***s.”

Glasgow Times:

Continuing to wave his arms around to the music, he shouts: “Solidarity. Camaraderie. It’s getting bigger and bigger and bigger.”

Pointing to the screen behind where the music is playing, he shouts “Oh yes.”

He ends the video by shouting into the camera: “Here we f*****g go.”

The video appears to be dated July 10 this year.

One worker was not impressed with the video.

The union member said the pay offer was “without doubt unacceptable” but described the video as showing “our egomaniac union rep out of his face urging us to vote no”.

Glasgow Times:

Mr Mitchell has led the Glasgow cleansing workers in a fight for better pay and conditions over a number of years.

He has posted videos from all over Glasgow highlighting overflowing bins and fly-tipping.

He has highlighted areas where workers have encountered rats and consistently called for a pay rise for the cleansing staff.

A GMB Scotland spokesperson said: "We are aware of the clip.

“It’s not been produced or published on the union’s platforms or the rep’s working time. It was a personal communication to a private group which has went further.

“Our rep is a well-respected, long-standing campaigner for working people and apologises for the industrial language and any offence it may have caused.

“GMB is focused on confronting the cost-of-living crisis facing our members, and in councils that means campaigning for a rejection of the shameful 2% pay offer.

“The longer political leaders ignore this massive real-terms pay cut, the greater the risk of this crisis turning into a catastrophe for the lowest-paid in our public services.”
