A man who nicked a TV after his neighbour left his door unlocked tried to claim it was a loan.

Shaun Stewart was staying in the Lodging House Mission Salvation Army hostel when the theft happened.

Glasgow Sheriff Court was told last week that around 2am on November 20, 2020, his neighbour in the next room had left his room, where there was a TV mounted on the wall.

He had lost his keys so left the door unlocked.

On his return the TV was missing.

The depute fiscal told the court: “It later transpired that the accused had taken this television and it was traced within his room.”

The court heard how Stewart, from Milton, claimed his friend had given him a loan of the TV.

The 32-year-old was not cautioned and charged at the time due to his levels of intoxication.

His defence brief said: “This was in November 2020 and events have moved on since then.”

The solicitor said Stewart had served a prison sentence in the meantime and is awaiting sentencing on another matter.

The lawyer added: “He had fallen out with the individual and he shouldn’t have taken the television.”

The court heard Stewart was facing a “lengthy period” in custody and Sheriff Simone Sweeney admonished him for the theft.
