A kind-hearted charity hero spent the heatwave by hand-delivering ice-cream to NHS staff.

John O'Byrne gifted nearly 200 tubs to the Royal Alexandra Hospital, the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital and Glasgow Royal Infirmary on Tuesday to cheer up the A&E medics.

He teamed up with ice-cream company Crolla’s to cool patients and staff down as temperatures soared.

John told the Glasgow Times: “After talking to people who were working in all the hospitals [I found out] they were running on empty because it was so warm.

“I thought it would be a nice touch to drop some ice-cream into as many hospitals as we could.

“I thought A&E departments would probably be the ones who would be feeling it more, so I got three drivers and we all went to a hospital each.

“The feedback we have had from staff has been great. It went down really well.

“The job the NHS does in the hospitals at every level is unbelievable, especially just now.

“I could have given every member of staff ice-cream but that was pretty impossible even for me.”

Following the deliveries, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde’s Paediatric Major Trauma team said: “Big shout out and thank you to John O’Byrne for the very kind delivery of some much needed ice-cream for the staff today.”
