Charity volunteers are facing forking out thousands of pounds after their shop window was smashed.

Police attended Share Alike in East Kilbride on Tuesday morning after the front window was broken.

A 16-year-old boy has now been charged in connection with the incident.

The incident is said to have happened around 7am on Tuesday on Cornwall Way in the town centre.

The charity is a community cafe which has offered 200,000 meals to people in need since the beginning of the pandemic in 2020.

It also works with charities like Women’s Aid to help those leaving unsafe environments and need to start over with nothing.

Manager Annemaire Campbell has been left heartbroken by the smashed window as the shop's insurance won’t cover it.

The 53-year-old, from East Kilbride, is refusing to close the shop while they raise funds as she doesn’t want to let vulnerable people in her community down.

She told the Glasgow Times: “We offer crisis food and clothes for people in need, we cannot close as people rely on us.

“The charity is small and community-run. We don’t get any funding from anywhere so we need to come up with it ourselves.

"We thought it would be covered by landlord insurance which we have now found out it won’t be.

“This means we are stuck in a situation where we need to pay around £3000 to fix it.

“We didn’t do anything wrong but are now het to fix this dangerous window.”

“Enquiries are ongoing.”
