A DRUNK shouted homophobic and racist remarks as he walked down a street in Glasgow.

Gary Beaton appeared at Glasgow Sheriff Court last week following the incident on January 22, 2022.

The 47-year-old was walking in Gallowgate at 6pm.

Witnesses heard him shout “c****y b******s”.

Prosecutor Laura Martin said: “This did not appear to be directed towards anyone in particular.

“Witnesses then observed the accused shouting and swearing, using phrases such as ‘p***s’.

“This was not directed to anyone in particular. Police were contacted and attended but couldn’t trace the accused at the time.

“He was subsequently traced within his home. Due to his intoxication, he could not be formally cautioned and charged at this time.”

Sheriff Valerie Mays told Beaton’s lawyer: “Your client does have a record.

“There has been no community-based disposal attempted since 2010. He clearly has an issue with alcohol.”

The sheriff turned to Beaton and said: “Hopefully you can see it's awful what’s been narrated.

"I’ll make you subject to a community payback order with a conduct requirement to attend substance misuse services to try to make sure you do stop drinking.”

Beaton, of Partick, was placed under social work supervision for 12 months.

The punishment was imposed as an alternative to custody.
