A concept video has been released of a new 'woodland hospital' near Glasgow, as part of plans to replace the ageing Monklands facility.

The existing healthcare facility was opened in 1977, with NHS Lanarkshire acknowledging that most mechanical and electrical infrastructure has 'exceeded its life expectancy'.

A new University Hospital Monklands is planned for a new site at Wester Moffat, with the location approved in January 2021.

A concept design has been released by the health board, with the new building scheduled to open in 2028.

With the ambition of being a 'woodland hospital', large parts of the 161.5 acre site will be given over to greenery, with NHS Lanarkshire looking to create Scotland's first hospital that's net zero carbon for build and operation.

The video release shows separate routes for emergency vehicles, the public and facilities traffic, as well as bus stops and a pedestrian/cycle route from Drumgelloch train station.

The health board has also promised more parking than the current hospital.

Monklands Replacement Project (MRP) director Graeme Reid said: “As we continue to develop the project’s outline business case, the team are delighted to share this inspirational concept design video with the public and our staff.

“Following on from the previous design images and video material we have released, it gives the community a fresh view of how the new hospital could look. The virtual journey around the campus captures the impressive scale of our major project to provide a state-of-the-art new Monklands."
