A Glasgow-based charity is giving out free back-to-school haircuts across several locations in the city next week.

The Halliday Foundation, based in Dalmarnock, has helped the homeless, less fortunate and struggling families in Glasgow since 2018, and its new venture is free haircuts for kids, by professional barbers and hairdressers.

The haircuts will take place on Tuesday, August 16, and will run throughout the day.

They will begin at Barrowfield Community Centre from 9.30am to 3pm and then move to Helenslea Community Hall from 3.30pm to 7.30pm.

Parents can either book or walk in.

Chris Halliday, 32, director of operations at the Halliday Foundation, told the Glasgow Times: "I thought it would be good to do back-to-school haircuts because the cost of living is through the roof right now, and parents have enough to pay for, never mind worrying about a haircut price.

“I just want people to come along and use this service, I don’t want people to feel as though they can’t.

“It’s open to anybody. It’s not like you can’t come if you aren’t struggling or in poverty, it’s for anybody. It’s there to be used.”

Chris added: “We’ve been providing school uniforms, stationery, and school bags over the last few weeks at our different pop-up locations. So on the days we’ll be doing the free haircuts, we’re going to be giving away free stationery packs and things like that for the children.”

The reception towards the free hair cuts so far has been overwhelming.

Chris added: “There are loads of parents contacting us, and that is why I’ve been putting posts up trying to get more barbers so that we can get more haircuts done.

“There has been loads of uptake at Helenslea Community Hall. I spoke to Michael, who runs it there, and he said there have been loads of parents coming in to ask about it.”

It’s clear that not only are parents energetic about the event, but Chris is also.

He said: “I love all this stuff".

“You know what it’s like when you get your hair cut, it just makes you feel a hundred times better.

“So, when they get a haircut, they’re going into school starting fresh again and feeling good about themselves.

“Whilst we’re doing these haircuts it gives myself and my team the chance to talk to the parents, and then there might be other support that we can help with.

“We just want to show people that we care.”
