A festival celebrating all things song and sea returns to the Tall Ship Glenlee with something for the whole family.

The Glasgow Shanty Festival will feature a day of free family activities followed by a ticketed evening of shanty bands.

On September 3, the rafters will be raised with rip-roaring songs of the sea along with stories and workshops for adults and youngsters alike.

Storyteller Jan Bee Brown will be on deck sharing tales of female pirates on the high seas, and renowned shanty bands Kimber’s Men, Monkey’s Fist, Muldoon’s Picnic, and Alan Jones are on board to play their maritime tunes.

A nod to Glasgow’s nautical past, the festival is a chance to experience living history and connect with sailors of old.

Sea shanties are traditional songs used to keep up morale and pace during the hard work aboard a tall ship.

They have been making a splash lately after 27-year-old Scottish singer Nathan Evans racked up millions of views on TikTok for his version of the shanty song Wellerman.

Tom Malone, organiser of the festival, told the Glasgow Times that everyone should come along and try a night of shanty fun for themselves.
