A community has celebrated the return of an annual gala day after a two-year wait.

Hundreds turned out for Bridgeton Community Learning Campus’ event which has been running since 2006.

It took place today and offered those in attendance a range of food, rides, and activities to bask in - all of which was free.

Organiser Lesley Ward, 54, from Bridgeton, said: “We have our gala day every August just before the kids go back to school. It’s a great wee treat for them before they return.

“It’s all free, there’s absolutely nothing that they have to pay for. We don’t have any stalls here selling things because we want to make sure we’re inclusive for all families.

“We also have space inside for any community groups that want to advertise anything, so it’s a good mix of things.”

She added: “It’s fantastic. I put the post out on Facebook about six weeks ago and we were inundated with people telling us how delighted they were that it was back again.

“People were round here from about 10.30am this morning, even though we didn’t start until 11am.

“We’re just absolutely delighted by the fact that we can welcome the community back into the grounds and just have a free, fun day.”

Due to the two-year gap, Lesley said: “It’s extra, extra special this year, that’s why we’ve made it a wee bit bigger this year.

“We just want to let people know that even though there are a lot of bad things happening in the area right now with the fires and things, there’s still a lot of good things and that’s what the BCLC are here for.”

Elaine McShane, 58, from Bridgeton, said: “It’s been a brilliant day, especially for the kids.

“The kids have been on the bouncy castles and the wee rollercoaster; they’ve had a shot on everything.

“They’ve had a great day, it’s just brilliant.”

Likewise, Cherish Shirley, 39 from Bridgeton, spent the day with her two children, Scarlett, nine, and Tony, seven.

She said: “We’re going to go on the teacups.

“We may go on other things but haven’t made our minds up yet.

“I’ve lived over the road for a good few years, so every time they have the gala day or something, we come.

“We’re just excited to be here today.”
