A southside café has been forced to cancel its popular brunch menu due to the ongoing cost crisis.

Patricia’s Coffee Bar on Victoria Road announced last Tuesday that rising inflation and energy costs have forced the café to scrap the entire hot food menu in a massive blow to the business.

Stephanie Docherty, one of the owners of Patricia’s, said: “Everything has gone up, from mushrooms to electricity, it’s just not sustainable.”

Customers will have until Wednesday, September 21 to enjoy the often-sold-out fare before the café scales back its food offering.

The Glasgow Times previously reported that another popular brunch spot in the East End, Scran, was set to close at the end of the month over the “current climate.”

Stephanie told The Glasgow Times: “The rising costs have taken a toll on most small businesses and we are no different.

“We have decided to remove our brunch menu completely and it hasn’t been an easy decision to make.

“Our focus has always been on quality and unfortunately due to rising costs we would have to reduce this dramatically in order to sustain the business, something we just aren’t prepared to do.

“We will still be open seven days a week, but our focus will change to a more cafe-style setting, with coffee, cakes, soups, sandwiches and pastries on the menu to reduce our overheads without compromising on the quality of what we have to offer.”

Patricia’s was, fortunately, able to keep the kitchen team’s jobs by transferring them to a bakery business the Docherty family owns and hopes to secure positions for the employees at a new coffee shop in Strathbungo over the next few months.

Stephanie said: “We are very fortunate to have a hard-working and supportive team behind us.”

“We also would like to note that we will continue to run the mental health chat cafe free of charge, every Monday from 6 to 8pm.”
