HIT comedy Still Game celebrates its 20th anniversary this year and the list of guest cameos over the nine series of the show is impressive.
Here at Times Past HQ, we thought it was time for a stroll back through the archives to check out some of the best.
The show’s cast – Ford Kiernan and Greg Hemphill as Jack and Victor, Jane McCarry as Isa, Paul Riley as Winston, Mark Cox as Tam, Sanjeev Kohli as Navid and Gavin Mitchell Boaby the barman – often welcomed other big-name stars into the fold.
For example, in the second episode of the very first series, Lord of the Rings star Billy Boyd (who played Peregrin ‘Pippin’ Took in the epic movie series, popped up.
In series two episode Doacters, Celia Imrie joined the cast as attractive ‘home help’ Mrs Begg, who is deeply suspicious that Winston’s mobility ‘issues’ may be nothing of the sort. Later that series, hard man actor David Hayman plays a snack van vendor who has some unfinished history with Winston.
Former Doctor Who Sylvester McCoy swaps time travel for Craiglang life in series three, as the recluse, Archie, who hasn't left his home since 1966. On discovering the building is earmarked for demolition, he re-enters society under the “care” of Jack and Victor.
Harry Potter star Robbie Coltrane appeared in the series four episode Dial-A-Bus, as driver Davie who causes chaos when he almost runs over Boaby.
Legendary Scottish actor Dorothy Paul plays Tam’s sister-in-law Molly, in series five episode Saucy, and in series six episode Seconds Out, boxer Jim Watt and singer Michelle McManus appear as themselves – Michelle turns up at The Clansman to be celebrity guest for a charity bottle smash, only to be told by Boaby he got Jim Watt instead.
Other celebrities to appear as themselves throughout the nine series include Lorraine Kelly, in One In One Out, who interviews Tam and Frances after Frances becomes the oldest mother in Britain at the age of 64, and singers Midge Ure and Clare Grogan.
Hollywood star Craig Ferguson plays a US stuntman revisiting his childhood home in Craiglang (and attempting to rekindle his teenage romance with Isa) in series eight episode The Fall Guy.
In series seven, Lewis actor Kevin Whately and Ronni Ancona were both delighted to appear on the show.
“I’m so honoured and thrilled to be part of Still Game,” said Ronni at the time. “I’m a huge fan of the show and I’m delighted to be back with the old gang again who I worked with on Pulp Video many years ago. That’s the official line. The truth is it’s really all an excuse to get close to Navid – all that polyester clothing really does it for me.”
Kevin Whately said: “The script made me laugh out loud and I’m really looking forward to filming it.”
A galaxy of stars signed up for the ninth and final series, including Line of Duty actor Martin Compston, The Bluebells and Gary Lewis.
