There is still time to provide input on a consultation relating to proposals to build a new neighbourhood of almost 1000 new homes in Cumbernauld.

Miller Homes is engaging with the public on its plans to construct around 950 homes and a new neighbourhood centre, plus infrastructure and drainage on a site southwest of Cumbernauld town centre, near Greenfaulds Railway Station and the A73.

The neighbourhood centre could possibly become home to a new primary school.

A portion of this development would be in the form of affordable housing to house tenants.

The most probable access route to the proposed development would be a new road leading from the existing roundabout but a secondary route may be built further south or via Summerhill and Gairngibbock Road which are to the west of the site.

The proposals also include planting new green belt boundaries on the southern edge of the site as well as to screen it off from the railway and A73, with existing greenery retained at the Shank Burn and Luggie Water.

At present the closest existing non-denominational schools are Woodlands Primary and Greenfaulds High School, whereas St Helens Primary and St Maurice’s High School are the closest denominational schools. As stated, discussions with the council could result in the establishment of a new primary school within this development.

The Core Path network is easily accessible from the site, with a Core Path being located along Summerhill and Garngibbock Road. This provides easy access to the wider path network to the north, connecting into Cumbernauld and the countryside to the south of the site.

Services and amenities are located within Cumbernauld, including supermarkets, medical centres, pharmacies and parks. The site also offers the opportunity to create new services and amenities through the creation of a new neighbourhood centre, serving new homes as well as the local area. This is in line with the Scottish Government’s focus on creating 20 minute neighbourhoods.

Miller Homes claims its proposed neighbourhood centre would also provide the opportunity to create new services and amenities which may be required and would be compliant with the Scottish Government’s “20-minute neighbourhoods”.

Feedback on the proposals can be submitted online via mhland.uk/southwestcumbernauld/have-your-say.aspx until Friday, October 14.

Once this consultation is concluded an application for planning permission in principle will be lodged with North Lanarkshire Council, at which time comments can be submitted directly to NLC which should make its decision in early 2023.
