Residents of a quiet residential street in East Kilbride have been told to expect the sound of a gunshot this week – but there is no need to panic.

It is simply filming for series three of Guilt, the final instalment of BBC Scotland’s hit comedy thriller about the adventures of brothers Max and Jake, played by Mark Bonnar and Jamie Sives.

Families in the St Leonards area of the South Lanarkshire town received a letter advising them film crews would be back this week – previously, the leafy street with its mix of individual, architect-designed houses served as the backdrop to a story in which Max and Jake accidentally run over and kill a man.

The letter advised: “Most of the scenes being shot will take place inside the property but there are a few short scenes that take place just outside.

“There is a scene in which a character kicks down the (fake) front door of the property so please do not be alarmed if you witness this occurring. The same scene involves the sound of a gunshot. There will be no guns used but you may hear a loud, but short, bang.”

So far, both Bonnar and Sives, as well as other cast members including Ellie Haddington, have been spotted filming the scenes.

The series, which is a co-production between BBC Scotland and BBC Two and produced by Expectation and Happy Tramp North, will see the return of characters from both series one and two. The second series ended with Max joining Jake in Chicago, having left a trail of deception behind him. As they return to Scotland, it becomes apparent the welcome they receive is not as warm or as straightforward as they might have hoped.

As they battle threats both old and new, it remains to be seen whether they get the happy ending they crave, or whether life conspires against them one more time.

Writer Neil Forsyth said: “We always saw Guilt as a trilogy so I am thrilled to be writing a final act for Max, Jake and some of the others we have met along the way. It is a story that will range from Chicago to Scotland, as our characters seek a final redemption."

Louise Thornton, Head of Commissioning at BBC Scotland, said: “We are incredibly proud of Guilt. It was the first drama commission for the BBC Scotland channel in 2019 and we have been delighted with how it has been received by our audiences. To be able to bring it back for a third and final time gives us the chance to wrap up the story of Max and Jake which we know will involve some hair-raising and edge-of-the-seat moments which the audience have come to expect.”

Jon Petrie, Director of BBC Comedy, says: “Guilt is a Scottish gem that we couldn’t resist bringing back for a third series, and Neil really has encapsulated the perfect ending to round off Max and Jake’s story.”
